Quality Ranking

Also known as: Ad Relevance Diagnostics

Quality ranking is Meta's diagnostic grading your ad's perceived quality against other ads competing for the same audience.

What it actually means

Quality ranking is one of Meta's three ad relevance diagnostics, alongside engagement rate ranking and conversion rate ranking. It compares your ad against competitors bidding for the same audience and reports a relative grade, from above average down to bottom 20%. Low quality rankings — triggered by clickbait tactics, ad-hiding, negative feedback, or simply dull creative — raise your costs, because the auction discounts high-quality ads and penalizes weak ones. The rankings are diagnostics, not goals: an ad with average quality but strong conversion ranking can still be your winner. They earn their keep when performance dips and you need to know whether creative, audience fit, or the post-click experience is the weak link.

For a local business

If your cost per lead creeps up and quality ranking reads 'below average,' the market is telling you the creative is stale for your area — refresh the ad before touching budget or targeting.
