Ad Auction
The ad auction is the real-time process where Meta decides which ad each person sees, weighing bid, estimated action rate, and ad quality.
What it actually means
Every time someone opens a feed, an auction runs among all advertisers targeting that person. Meta ranks each contender by total value: the advertiser's bid, the estimated probability the person will take the ad's desired action, and the ad's quality. Crucially, the highest bidder does not automatically win — a relevant, engaging ad with a modest budget routinely beats a bigger spender with weak creative, and pays less per result doing it. This is why creative quality and accurate conversion signals are economic levers, not just aesthetics: they raise your auction rank without raising your bid. The auction is the invisible market underneath every metric in your dashboard.
The auction is why a local shop with authentic photos and a firing pixel can out-deliver a national chain in its own zip code — relevance discounts your costs.
