Review Velocity
Review velocity is the rate at which a business earns new customer reviews — a freshness signal for local rankings and buyer trust.
What it actually means
Total review count matters, but so does the clock. A business with 200 reviews whose latest is from last year reads as past-tense; one earning several fresh reviews a month reads as busy and currently good. That pace is review velocity, and it influences both local search rankings — recency and steady flow are prominence signals — and human decisions, since shoppers check the newest reviews first. Sustainable velocity comes from process, not campaigns: a habit of asking every happy customer at the moment of satisfaction, ideally via a direct review link by text. Sudden unnatural spikes look like what they usually are, and platforms filter accordingly.
A med spa collecting three or four genuine Google reviews a month will, within a year, out-rank and out-convert the competitor sitting on a bigger but frozen review count.
