Performance Max

Also known as: PMax

Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that runs one campaign across Search, Maps, YouTube, Gmail, and Display using goal-based automation.

What it actually means

Performance Max is Google's all-in-one automated campaign: you supply the goal, budget, and a set of creative assets — headlines, images, video — and Google assembles ads and buys placements across every surface it owns, from search results and Shopping to Maps, YouTube, Gmail, and the Display network. Machine learning decides who sees what, where, guided by your conversion data. The appeal is reach and simplicity; the criticism is opacity, since reporting reveals little about which channels or queries spent the money. PMax lives or dies on the quality of the conversion signals you feed it — garbage tracking in, garbage optimization out.

For a local business

For a local business, Performance Max can surface you in Maps, search, and YouTube from one campaign — but connect real conversion tracking first, or it will happily optimize toward cheap clicks instead of booked customers.
