Conversion

A conversion is a completed action you've defined as valuable — a purchase, form submission, call, or booking — tracked back to your marketing.

What it actually means

A conversion is whatever action you decide counts: for e-commerce a purchase, for a service business a lead form, a booked appointment, or a phone call. It is the atom of performance marketing — CPA, ROAS, conversion rate, and the optimization algorithms all build on it. That makes the definition itself a strategic choice. Optimize toward an action too shallow (page views, clicks) and platforms deliver cheap volume that never becomes revenue; define it too deep (final signed contract) and there may be too few events for algorithms to learn from. The best conversion event is the deepest action that still occurs often enough to generate consistent signal.

For a local business

For most local businesses, the right conversion to track and optimize for is a lead — a form fill or call — because purchases happen offline where the pixel can't see them.
