AI Overviews
Also known as: Google AI Overviews, SGE
AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated answers at the top of search results, summarizing sources before any traditional links appear.
What it actually means
AI Overviews (which grew out of Google's Search Generative Experience) place an AI-written answer above the classic ten blue links for a growing share of searches. The overview synthesizes several sources and cites them, which reshapes the game: many searchers get their answer without clicking anything, shrinking traffic for informational queries, while being cited inside the overview becomes the new position zero. Content that is clearly structured, factually direct, and demonstrates first-hand expertise gets cited most. For local queries, overviews frequently draw on business profiles and reviews, tying this squarely back to local-presence fundamentals rather than website tricks.
When someone asks Google 'how much does a kitchen remodel cost in my area,' the AI Overview answers first — a local contractor whose site states real prices plainly is far likelier to be the source it cites.
