A/B Test

Also known as: Split Test, A/B Testing

An A/B test compares two versions of an ad or page that differ in one element, splitting traffic between them to see which performs better.

What it actually means

An A/B test (or split test) settles arguments with data: version A and version B run simultaneously to randomly divided audiences, identical except for the one variable being tested — the hook, the image, the headline, the offer, the form length. Whichever produces the better result wins, and the winner becomes the new control for the next test. The discipline lies in the constraints: one variable at a time, enough volume and time to trust the difference, and resisting the urge to call a winner after twenty clicks. Meta provides a built-in A/B testing tool that prevents audience overlap. Compounded over months, small verified wins are how ordinary accounts become exceptional ones.

For a local business

You don't need big-company traffic to test big things — a local business testing '$99 first visit' against '20% off' will usually see a clear winner within a couple of weeks, and that answer is reusable everywhere.
